A Legend of the Everglades

Where History Meets the Wild

Historical Everglades City dates back over 1,000 years. The Rod and Gun Club is built on the original structure of the first permanent white settler who founded Everglades City in 1864. In 1922, Barron G. Collier — a banker and railroad magnate — purchased almost all of Southwest Florida, including the Rod and Gun Club, which he operated as an exclusive private retreat. He hosted international dignitaries and several United States Presidents within these storied walls.

Among its legendary guests: John Wayne, Ernest Hemingway, Burt Reynolds, and Jack Nicklaus — all drawn to the untamed beauty of the Everglades and the warmth of this historic club.

The family behind the Rod and Gun Club

The Heart of the Club

A Family Legacy

Behind every legendary establishment is a family that pours their heart into it. The Rod and Gun Club is no exception. For generations, the same warmth, hospitality, and passion for the Everglades that built this place has been carried forward by the family who calls it home.

As one guest so beautifully put it: "Taylor and her mom really showed the true heart and soul of the club." That spirit — genuine, warm, and deeply rooted in this land — is what makes the Rod and Gun Club unlike any other place in Florida.

When you visit, you are not simply a guest — you become part of a story that stretches back over 160 years, woven into the very fabric of Everglades City.

Welcome to the family.

First time visit today to the Rod and Gun Club. Taylor could not have been more hospitable and friendly. All the staff were welcoming and friendly. Food was delicious — steak sandwich, burger, shrimp, fish sandwich, chicken strips — all of us enjoyed our food! The property is beautiful. We can't wait to come back for a few nights! Huge shout out to Taylor and her mom — they were such a wonderful family and really showed the true heart and soul of the club!
